like we had just a year ago and the one we're having over the fiscal cliff, is that we have to be willing right now to come to the table, have these negotiations and, speaker boehner, the day after the election, signaled to the white house, he went to the podium and said we're willing to put tax revenue on the tail but we must have the spending, spending reductions and also the entitlement reforms. jenna: so the white house says they will not compromise unless we do see tax rates going up. at least for the wealthiest. what do you see the end result being? if that is the red line they're drawing, what do you see as part of the compromise there, they say they must see those rates go higher?. >> it is a question whether or not they're going to insist on those, that those top 2% rates going up. it is really a straw man in the whole debate. even if we raised the top 2%, we tax them at 100% it would only fund the federal government for 91 days. this does not solve the problem and we need, we need a real fix, not just a quick fix. it comes through tax reform. it comes through also, addressing the structural spending problems, the out of control spending the president put on t

clear, i think at least, that the democrats want to go off the fiscal cliff. you can see it in the fact that president obama's out there campaigning instead of sitting down with john boehner, running around pushing for a bill to increase -- extend just the middle class tax cuts which he knows republicans will never do. you can see it in the fact that 33 senate democrats signed this letter which says, quote, we will oppose including social security cuts for current or future pen fisheries in any -- beneficiaries at any time. that's signed by harry reid. senator durbin giving a speech saying no touching medicare or medicaid in any year end package. so, basically, the democratic position is no changes to social security, no changes to medicare, no changes to medicaid, yet the mainstream media all you hear is three words: grover, grover, grover. all you hear is about republican intransigence on taxes. where are the stories about democratic intransigence on entitlements? it seems to me that what they want to do is go off the fiscal cliff, pocket the increase on the wealthy, the tax increase on the wealthy, and blame republicans for the middle class tax increases. and if that's what the

developments tonight related to the fiscal cliff battle being waged in washington. now, late this afternoon house speaker john boehner sent a letter to the president detailing a bold counter offer to the administration's plan. the g.o.p. proposal does not include a tax increase on the so-caldwell thee but does contain $800 billion in revenue through tax reform, another $600 billion in health savings and much more. all told, the net savings amount to around 2.2 trillion dollars. the white house responded to this letter by saying that the president is, quote, willing to compromise but not on the subject of making job creators pay more in taxes. however, what our tax and spend commander-in-chief fails to understand is that putting money into the hands of you, the american people, is the single best way to spur economic growth, and it's not just people like ronald reagan who understand this principle. bill clinton famously said the era of big government is over and the end of wel welfare as we know it. why? because government is not the answer. government is the problem. there was that other iconic democrat, the one that occu
